Skin Problems: Protection, Prevention, and Correction

Skin Problems At Every Age

Skin problems arise as early as adolescence, and as we age, our skin will change, aging and adapting to our bodies and our environment.  Below are some of the skin worries that may arise during different stages of our life:

Youth to Young Adult – Age 13 to 20

  • Hormone Changes
  • Excess Oil leading to shiny and greasy looking skin
  • Acne
  • Large Pores

Adults – Age 20 to 40

  • Dry Skin
  • Fine Lines that may develop into wrinkles when not treated properly
  • Large Pores
  • Sun Spots
  • Stretch Marks
  • Laugh Lines
  • Enlargement of existing pores for people with oily skin

Mature Adults – Age 40 and Up

  • Wrinkles
  • Eye Bags
  • Rosacea
  • Pigmentation
  • Dull Skin

So What Do We Do?

The above problems are general examples of what can happen during different periods of our lives. And depending on factors such as age, lifestyle, and diet, one or a combination of the following steps may be needed.

Prevention can only happen when the problem is still in its early stages. This is before it becomes a permanent issue. It is very important to start early when signs are beginning to show.

Excess oil: When an adolescent has excess oil on their skin, their skin wills how signs of shininess, dullness, and prone to breakouts. If untreated properly, acne can lead to scars and the excess oil can lead to large pores.

Protection, as we hit maturity our lifestyle changes, and the life that we lead may have physical consequences, and at this time, prevention of further problem development is crucial.

Dry Skin: Fine dry lines will occur from dry skin, and if not properly treated, deep wrinkles will visualize.

Correction usually happens once the problem has already occurred, and it has not been taken care of. At this time, it will take time and resource to correct and return the skin to a balanced, healthy skin.

Pigmentation: Sun damage is one cause of pigmentation. Excess exposure to the sun that reaches under the epidermal (surface layer of the skin), causes sunspots. To correct this problem, the following methods or combination of methods may be required: laser treatment, regular facial treatments, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.

Anti-Aging the Holistic Way: No Botox, Fillers, or Facelifts Required

Anti-Aging the Holistic Way: No Botox, Fillers, or Facelifts Required

Botox, fillers, and facelifts have become the quick and seemingly normal way to turn back time. However, you don’t have to use these expensive, painful, and often harmful methods in order to reduce the visible signs of aging. While the key to preventing wrinkles and fine lines is to start when you’re young, there are natural steps you can take in your 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s.

At VIE Derma Clinic, our skin guru Julie Cvijic always tells our clients that the key to healthy, youthful skin is exfoliation, a healthy diet, and the right products that are free of fragrances, parabens, and other toxic chemicals. The dangers of Botox and invasive surgeries are simply not worth the consequences it can bring to your overall health and well being, not to mention the “emotionless” face associated with the treatments.

Here are a few of Julie’s top anti-aging facials that always have incredible results:

Healthy Skin Habit: H20

Healthy Skin Habit: H20

Many people underestimate the power of H20, thinking that they need to pile on moisturizers and serums in order to achieve proper hydration. While these products are important, water plays an essential role in not only keeping your body functioning, but also your skin.

hydrate skin

So the next time you’re in the shower, cleanse your face and then hold it under water. This will allow your pores to absorb and “drink” the water. Then let your skin naturally air dry to ensure maximum hydration (plus now you have an excuse to spend a little longer in the shower!).

Laser Skin Treatments: Our Best Kept Secret

Laser Treatments for the Skin: Our Best Kept Secret

When you think of laser, you may think it’s only effective for hair removal. But this technology does far more than just that. Laser treatments are still one of the best-kept secrets in the beauty and anti-aging community. Needless to say we’re huge fans, not only because it doesn’t require needles or surgery, but because the recovery is nearly non-existent and the results, well, speak for themselves.

How it works is the laser uses light energy to deliver heat to the deeper layer of the skin called the dermis. The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer. This popular procedure is also called lasabrasion, laser peel, or laser vaporization.

If you’re looking for a non-invasive anti-aging treatment, laser is particularly effective for treating wrinkles, deep smile lines, sagging skin, and a decrease in skin volume. When followed with a clinical facial, you will greatly reduce or delay the signs of aging. Celebrities like Gwenyth Paltrow, Kim Kardashian, and Jennifer Aniston are big fans of laser, equating their youthful, flawless skin to these treatments.

Besides anti-aging, laser can help remove the appearance of spider and varicose veins as well as remove skin tags, moles, and age spots. Our laser technician at VIE Derma Clinic is also a registered nurse, and offers the latest in medical esthetic procedures using the most advanced technology. Treatments are customized for individual clients based on their needs.

Now that we’re halfway through summer, wedding season is in full swing. If you’re about to say your “I do’s”, you’re probably busy from morning to night with preparations. However, there’s one item on the to-do list that many regret they forget, and that’s skin preparation.  For a bride and groom, having a flawless complexion is vital to feeling relaxed and confident for the big day.

Make-up Won’t Solve Your Skin Problems

One of the biggest mistakes brides make is thinking that make-up will solve all of their skin problems. While make-up can hide blemishes to a degree, without a solid, healthy base, it can only do so much.

facial for brides

To achieve healthy, smooth, supple skin, we highly recommend the Vitamin C Anti-Oxidant Facial. This treatment will instantly help brighten and freshen up skin, while also prepping it for make-up. Every year we’re busy from June to early September booking these in for brides a few days before their wedding!

Just because men don’t wear make-up doesn’t mean they shouldn’t prep as well. Our Just-For-Men Clinical Facial is catered to fit each groom’s needs. With a professional skin analysis, deep exfoliation, and facial massage, a flawless complexion will go great with the tux.

Massage The Toxins Away

Our Lymphatic Drainage Massage improves circulation and lymphatic systems, while also speeding up toxin removal in a gentle, relaxing way that quickly relieves congestion. Have edema? This massage will do the trick and help heal it.

Mani/Pedi Bridal Packages

With your skin taken care of, complete your look with custom-tailored nail treatments by our nail guru, Kazumi. The treatments include a spa manicure, spa pedicure, mask and paraffin, to relax and rejuvenate.  The day before your wedding, we will refine your nails and add a set of nail decorations that are handcrafted to match. This is also a great gift for your bridesmaids!

Ensuring your skin looks great for the big day isn’t pampering; it’s a necessity. A bride will look stunning no matter what, but with these extra additions, you can be sure to walk down the aisle with confidence.

Forever Young: Skin Care Essentials in Your 20s

Forever Young: Skin Care Essentials in Your 20s

As we grow up, there are certain milestones that we have to wait for. Getting our drivers license, drinking alcohol, and renting a car all require an age restriction that many of us can’t wait to reach. However, there is one thing that doesn’t require you to be a certain age: skin care.

skin care

A common misconception is that you don’t have to worry about wrinkles until you have them, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The best way to rid of wrinkles is to prevent them, and that should start at an early age. Even at the beginning of your twenties, learning how to develop a skincare regimen is one of the best things you could do for yourself.

Knowing what products to use, when to use them, and how to use them are key. Just like there are no two people alike, your skin’s needs differ not only from person to person, but also from year to year, season to season. For example, your skin will need more hydration due to the harsh cold elements in the winter, whereas in summer skin tends to get oily from the hot and humid weather.

Our skin guru, Julie Cvijic, prescribes products based on your needs; therefore, we can’t tell you exactly which products to use. However, we can tell you which skin care essentials should be in your cupboard:

  1. Exfoliant
  2. Cleanser
  3. Sunblock
  4. Day Moisturizer
  5. Night Moisturizer
  6. Eye Cream

Without proper exfoliation, your cleanser, sunblock, and moisturizer cannot penetrate the skin, which is why it ranks #1 on our list. Other skin care essentials include serums, masques, and special treatments if you suffer from skin ailments like pigmentation or acne. However, it all depends on the needs and condition of your skin.

If you’ve ever met Julie, you’ll know that she’s much more than a clinical facialist; she’s a skincare coach. She’ll tell you exactly what your skin needs and use her 35 years of experience to fix and transform your complexion.

Remember, no machine can fix the skin without proper maintenance. So take of your skin. Your 50-year-old self will thank you.

Sun Protection for Your Skin

Sun Protection for Your Skin

With sunny days and warmer temperatures, we’ve felt very lucky to be having such a beautiful Spring so far in Vancouver. Spending more time outside to enjoy the natural surroundings our city is known for is not only good for your Vitamin D intake, but it’s also a great way to de-stress and exercise from our sedentary lives.

While we always support getting outdoors, as skincare professionals, we can’t stress the importance of sunscreen. SPF protection isn’t just something that should be applied when the sun is out; it should be a daily ritual, much like brushing your teeth. Even if it’s cloudy or raining, harmful UV rays penetrate your epidermis, which means daily application is essential for preventing wrinkles, fine lines, and even more dangerous conditions like skin cancer.

sun protection

As our philosophy states, prevention and protection are the best and most effective tools for preventing premature aging and other skin ailments. Investing in your skincare now will not only help to ensure a flawless complexion as you age, but even save you money and time in the future from corrective procedures.

For your face, neck, and chest, we recommend using a product with zinc that has a minimum of SPF 25. One of the products Julie prescribes is the Crème Solaire Mineral Sun Crème by G.M. Collin. This non-greasy formula protects the skin without clogging your pores or using harmful toxic chemicals like many other SPF’s on the market.

It’s not just your face and neck that need protection either. Your lips, hands, and skin around the eyes also need to be covered as well. These areas can suffer from the sun’s harmful effects, so remember to always keep these commonly exposed body parts protected whenever you step outside. Also, don’t forget another crucial step: reapplication. Always reapply your sunscreen every 2-3 hours.

To find out which of sun protection products are right for your skin, contact Julie for a free consultation.
